It’s a tale that is somehow as old as time, dogs making war veterans see how beautiful life is. If you love reading about dogs, you probably have read dozens of articles about therapy pups that have saved war veterans from PTSD, where the best pharmaceutical companies have failed.
In this story, we share the beautiful bond that has been made between two heroes who have lost a leg. A fisherman in Tennessee rescued Scooter. He was severely hurt and barely alive when he was rushed to the nearest vet’s office. Unfortunately, one of his legs had to be amputated.
It would seem that a rescue dog who is missing one leg would have a hard time getting adopted. But that’s not always the case. Luckily for Scooter, Joshua Ferguson found him. Joshua is a war veteran who served in Iraq during the Gulf War. Unfortunately, his military career was cut short when his team encountered an IED.
They were riding a truck en route to a mission when a roadside explosive detonated, injuring Joshua and the other four members of his team. He lost his leg that day, but despite what happened, he is grateful that he and his team were alive and well.
When he saw the ad for Scooter, the 3-legged dog, he knew that he had to adopt him, and when they met, it turned out he was absolutely right. Joshua shares that he and Scooter were made for each other. Because they are both amputees, they sort of understand each other, and that makes their bond a lot stronger.
Although Joshua does not have PTSD, he admits that sometimes he feels down for various reasons. But having Scooter around reminds him that he still has a beautiful life. That despite the challenges he has, others have it worse, so he shouldn’t complain. We should always be looking for the silver lining, but sometimes, we don’t have to look up at the clouds to find it. It’s within our dogs, just right beside us.
